Learning Community Information
Students reside in Wilson Hall, where they are paired with other learning community students. Wilson Hall is a traditional-style residence hall located in South Village. Opening in 2024, the building is equipped study lounges, community kitchen, laundry, and student/professional staff for support.
In collaboration with various campus partners, students are offered a range of services and resources within the Learning Community, including:
- Academic Advising: Students enrolled in the 49er First LLC will have additional 1:1 academic advising support. Course planning is an essential piece to a student’s journey throughout their time at Charlotte, and staff will be present to assist along the way.
- Mentorship: Learning Community participants will be paired with an experienced peer mentor who can offer guidance and support. The peer mentor will also be a First-Gen Niner, and will be tasked with ensuring a strong sense of belonging exists within the cohort.
- Academic Support: Academic Skill Workshops will be offered to ensure students consider all aspects of how they can be successful in the classroom. Workshop topics range from goal setting and communicating with a professor to stress and time management.
- Financial Literacy: Students apart of the 49er First LLC are enrolled in the Rainy Day Savings Program. This program was created to help college students build healthy financial habits, but most importantly to establish an emergency fund.
- Career Counseling: Students will also connect with the University Career Center by exploring options, connecting with employers, and learning how to market themselves and their strengths.
- Community Building: Charlotte offers opportunities for students to connect with each other and build a sense of community. Opportunities may include social events, peer support groups, and other activities that help First-Generation college students feel more connected to their college and their peers.

Is the Learning Community residential?
Yes, students reside in Wilson Hall, the newest residence hall on campus. Wilson Hall is located is located in South Village, and is exclusively for First-Year, first time in college students. This provides participants with the opportunity to build community within the program, in addition to other first-year students.
What are the benefits of 49er First Learning Community?
The first year of a student’s academic journey is critical for their long-term academic and personal success. Students who participate in the Learning Community receive personalized support in advising, career development, and financial literacy.
In addition to programming that supports growth in all areas, students will be assigned to a peer mentor who can assist with easing the transition from high school to university life and helping students feel connected to campus.
What class will I take as part of the Learning Community?
In the Fall Semester, students will be enrolled in a 3 credit, First-Year Seminar course that is designed to assist with the intellectual and social transition from high school to college. It will provide an orientation to campus resources and help students plan how to make the most of their time at Charlotte, specifically with a First-Gen focus.
In the Spring Semester, students will be enrolled in Introduction to Research; A 1 credit professional development course that prepares students for successful engagement in undergraduate research. Provides an in-depth overview of research methods and practices. Students will actively participate in conducting literature research and learn about the research process, and be provided with a foundation for how to safely consume literature.
